Opinion article: ‘Vaccines for Africa by Africa’

High-income countries should invest in regional production of medicines that is not only in Africa, but also for and by Africa. Wemos director Mariëlle Bemelmans and Afya na Haki director Moses Mulumba advocate this in a joint opinion article for Think Global Health. “A sustainable pharmaceutical industry in Africa that is needs-driven and independent from priorities and profit motives in the Global North, requires regional production by local and regional manufacturers.” Read the full opinion article ➔

For years, partner organizations in Make Way have been actively advocating for its ratification. Their endeavours came to fruition in June 2024, with the African Disability Protocol’s official ratification. The work continues though to ensure more countries ratify, sign onto and implement the African Disability Protocol into laws and policies. Learn more ➔

Wemos tips & picks

To truly tackle structural inequities within global health, we need a fundamental shift. In this insightful talk at the Yale School of Public Health, Professor Madhukar Pai explores how global health, with its colonial origins, is still dominated by those with power and privilege. He issues a powerful call to action, urging Global North actors to move from saviourism to international solidarity. He also presents examples of how this transformation can be achieved.
